Sulphate-free shampoo: all you need to know

Wash days are hectic. From oils, to shampoos and conditioners, and then styling products, there’s a lot that goes into your scalp and hair, besides time and effort. A key part of it is using the right products and the right ingredients for your hair, and the first place to start is knowing what goes into your favourite products.

In shampoos, the vital ingredients that cleanse and lather are sulphates. Commonly found are sodium lauryl and sodium laureth sulphate, which are also found in other products like toothpastes, body, and face washes. As surfactants, they draw oil and water away from the scalp and allow dead skin and dirt to be removed. They’re also responsible for the quintessential lather that’s found in most shampoos, which makes it easier to rub and apply the product into your hair effectively.

There’s no doubt that sulphates are effective ingredients, but it just might be that they are too effective. Its efficiency in clearing oils from the hair may deplete natural ones that are necessary for scalp health, leaving your hair drier and more susceptible to damage. This may also lead to increased irritation if you already have a more sensitive scalp, or suffer from skin conditions like psoriasis, acne, or rosacea.

Sulphate shampoos are also notorious for leading to damage in textured and dyed hair, which require lots of moisture to maintain curl health and prevent dryness, frizz, and split ends. For most hair types, sulphate shampoos are generally extreme and can lead to future issues, even if it may be effectively working right now. These products are beneficial only for very oily scalp conditions, and should be used by necessity.

Then, if sulphates are bad, which ingredients lead to the right level of exfoliation, cleaning, and nourishment? Instead of ones with harsh chemicals, we’ve created a line of shampoos which work brilliantly to give you a holistic and enjoyable hair care experience. Each product is designed with different needs and requirements, keeping in mind that there is no ‘one shampoo suits all’ approach.

If you’re looking to grow your hair while nourishing it, Botanic Hearth’s Rosemary and Mint shampoo revives blood flow to the scalp, which strengthens hair follicles. The antibacterial properties of both rosemary and mint prevent dandruff and irritation, and effectively clean the scalp from dirt, grime, and daily buildup.

Our Tea Tree and Aloe Vera shampoo is perfect for irritated and sensitive scalps. Antibacterial and soothing, it prevents dryness and dandruff, gently removing oil and dirt to heal and clean effectively.
